According to the President of the Hawaii and California NAACP, the song is racist.
California NAACP President Alice Huffman declares the third verse of the Star-Spangled Bannerl is overtly racist because it mentions “No refuge could save the hireling and slave/ From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave.” Plainly it is talking about military invaders made up of mercenaries (“hireling”) and conscripts (“slave”).
Meanwhile, it is now standard practice to slander the country as a place of “systematic racial injustice.”
